Chinanews, Beijing, Aug 17 – Although most young people in China know that auto emissions make up the main pollution in cities, when asked “do you want to buy a car if you can afford to”, only 15% of the young people will say “no.” In contrast, 76% of the young people say they will or probably will buy one.The information was released on Tuesday in a report on the results from an investigation on the sustainable consumption issue among Chinese young people. The report was part of the activity that focused on relationship between young people's sustainable consumption and climate changes. The activity was jointly organized by the China Youth Daily and the British Council.The survey covered young people mostly living in large or medium cities in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities and aged 30.1 on average. About 2,500 questionnaires were issued.The survey shows that nearly 80% of the young people knows about global warming and the bad consequences brought by global warming. Only 20% of the young people do not know or have an incorrect understanding about global warming. In the survey, 76% of the respondents say they take nearly every means to save energy and electricity. Only 0.4% of the respondents say they are totally unaware of the problem.However, when young people are asked to sacrifice their life quality in order to protect the environment, few say they can do so. As the survey shows, for example, 38% of the respondents hope they can have a larger house in future. 21% of the respondents want to travel abroad and most want to buy a car of their own if they can afford to.
