Chinanews, Beijing, Aug. 14 – The China Youth Daily Social Investigation Center and the Information Center of Sina.com carried out a survey last week. Among the 7,916 people that took part in the survey, 65.3% say their views about a person will be affected by that person's financial background, the China Youth Daily reported.Chinese economist Mao Yushi once said that nowadays, many people would like to speak for the poor rather than for the rich. On the other hand, people like to do things for the rich instead of the poor. The reason is that when you speak for the poor, you are always on the right stand. However, if you speak for the rich, you support the wrong side in the first place. On the other hand, most people are happy to do things for the rich because they can get rewards, because doing things for the poor might probably get nothing in return.In the survey, 89.8% of the participants say the social phenomenon described by Mao does exist in China.Despite the fact that rich people do not have a good image in China, 92.9% of the people in the survey still “wish they can become rich some day.”When the participants are asked to pick up several words to describe the rich in today's society, the words that appear in the first three places are luxury (57.1%), greedy (52.7%) and corrupt (45.0%). Positive words like cleverness (33.1%) and diligence (31.7%) only follow them afterwards.The reason for rich people to have a rather bad image in society is that in China, there are no laws and regulations to guide people's conduct of getting rich, and most people get an impression from their daily experiences that the rich people become rich through illegal means. These rich people, as the public think, do not accumulate wealth in ways that are permitted by laws and state policies. Rather, they accumulate wealth money by relying on their special social connections. Sometimes these social connections involve corruptness or even criminal activities. In light of this, many people think it is very unfair for these people to become rich. On the other hand, the rich also feel that the ways by which they become rich are very unstable, said Ding Xueliang, a scholar.
