Chinanews, Beijing, August 8 – In most Chinese people’s minds, Inner Mongolia is a place of vast grasslands and herdspeople riding on horses. However, Mongolian herdspeople today have settled down in villages, and various autos have taken the place of horses in many aspects in their lives.In fact, horse wagons and yurts can only be seen at scenic spots today. Take Dongsheng District of Erdos as an example, where there are 17 cars in every 100 families.Aoyunsuyile, a herdswoman, was relocated in a special village a few years ago. Now she is the owner of a small restaurant. Many of her fellow herdspeople have started new careers like doing business, running hotels, etc.“We were struggling in sandstorms before the relocation, but now we have gained new lease of life,” said Aoyunsuyile.Sixty years ago, there were 200 thousand herdspeople, but the figure has increased to 1.7 million nowadays. The increased herding population has also caused great ecological problems like the degradation of the grassland and desertification. Thus the regional government of Inner Mongolia has relocated a large number of herdspeople in special settlements, and their annual income has reached 5,000 yuan per capita.
