Beijing, June 21 - A total 117 special equipment accidents occurred in China in the first five months, killing 110 people and leaving another 124 injured, the country's quality watchdog announced on Wednesday.The death toll was seven percent higher than that in the same period last year, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said.The accidents recorded a surge since May, with the number of accidents caused by cranes and elevators rising 29.9 percent and 15.4 percent year-on-year respectively, the administration noted.It added 24 people had been killed in 16 accidents caused by cranes between May 1st and June 19.The administration urged local branches to find out which equipment caused higher death toll and why, and to enforce specially-designed measures to reduce the fatality.
