Chinanews, Shanghai, May 23 - Chen Youyong, Zhang Hua and other 4 suspects involved in the biggest stowaway case cracked in Seattle of the US, were put on trial in Shanghai First Intermediate People's Court on May 22 under the public prosecution of the first branch of Shanghai Municipal People's Procuratorate.The six persons mentioned above are suspected of smuggling 22 Fujianese to the US in a cargo container in 2006. They had installed several ventilators on the container so those people inside wouldn't get suffocated.According to the confession of the 22 stowaways, Chen Youyong is the major organizer of the smuggling activity, who came up with the idea in last August in Zhang Hua's house. The two worked out a plan whereby each of the stowaway would be charged $35,000 if they succeeded in reaching the US, from which Chen would get $30,000. and if a stowaway was captured in the US, he/she would only need to pay Chen $23,000.On March 18, 2006, 22 stowaways (the youngest being 18) gathered in Shanghai from Fujian Province, where they were put in a cargo container on the ship Rotterdam and left for the US.On April 5, not long after reaching Seattle, they were discovered by Marina Fisher, a port security official, who called Seattle Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Several minutes later, all of them were captured. After a short inquiry session, the CBP notified the Chinese Police of the case.
