Chinanews, Urumqi, December 12 – Large quantities of wheat have been excavated in an ancient tomb in Turpan, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which was found during a road construction project. Though the wheat has been sealed in the tomb for more than 2,400 years, it still looks golden and fresh, let alone its plump shape. The tomb is identified as dating back to the Warring States Period (476 – 221 BC) or the Qin Dynasty (221 - 206 BC). The wheat found in the tomb is fresh as if it were just reaped. There are no weeds found mixed with the wheat, which shows that Turpan had well-developed agriculture at that time. The earliest wheat in China was found in a tomb in the Tarim Basin, also in Xinjiang, which can be dated back to 4,000 years ago, but that wheat was not well preserved, and some of the seeds had been carbonized.
