Chinanews, Haikou, December 7 – Archeologists have identified the fossils unearthed in Changjiang Li Autonomous County, Hainan Province, as of giant apes, giant pandas, chimpanzees, hyenas, rhinoceros, tapirs, elephants and porcupines that lived about 400,000 – 600,000 years ago.
The fossils were found in a quarry. Their existence proved that Hainan Island used to be part of the mainland, as most of the animals mentioned above originated there. It is estimated that the animals migrated to Hainan via the present Qiongzhou Strait, which used to be a land bridge years ago.
