Chinanews, Beijing, Sept 20 – The last stop for the Olympic torch relay on Mt. Qomolangma (known in the West as Mt. Everest) will be located at a site 8,300 meters above sea level, said Wang Yongfeng, head of the Chinese mountain climbing team.He made the statement on Wednesday at the ceremony held for the Kickoff of the Olympic Torch Relay Directing and Information Center. The ceremony was jointly held by the Legend Group and the Mountaineering Sport Management Center under the General Administration of Sport.China had repeatedly tested the Olympic torch relay route to Mt. Qomolangma. It has been finally decided that next year when the Olympic torch relay takes place, the torch will be delivered first from the base camp to this last stop. From there, the bearer will carry the torch to reach the top of the mountain and then return to the base camp, said Wang.Climbing Mt. Qomolangma will be one of the most exciting parts during the Olympic torch relay event. However, in order to make this come true, scientists and athletes will face three major problems. First, they need to make sure that the Olympic torch can arrive at the site on time; second, they need to ensure that the Olympic torch can still burn when it is brought to the highest point on earth despite the low temperature, low pressure and the lack of oxygen there; third, people around the world will be able to see the live broadcast of the torch relay on Mt. Qomolangma. In May, this year, related Chinese department carried out an on-site test and the test result showed that all the three goals could be reached.
