Chinanews, Beijing, November 17 – The major part of the Three Gorges Project will be completed very soon, and the project has won a good name for its good environmental effect on both the area itself and the entire Yangtze River Basin.By now, the project has generated 300 billion kwh of electricity. If such energy had been generated by thermalpower, there would have been 220 million tons of carbon dioxide emitted to the atmosphere, and 100 million tons of coals would have been burned. The project is a great contribution of China to the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol.China has invested 39.22 billion yuan, all collected by issuance of treasury bonds, on the building of sewage and waste treatment plants in the area, and many polluting enterprises have been closed down there. Other environmental protection measures have also been taken.
