Chinanews, Beijing, Oct 22 – On Sunday, China's moon probe satellite went through the checkup for the last time. It is now placed at the satellite launching center 70 kilometers away from Xichang city, ready for the launch. The moon probe satellite will be fuelled ten hours before the launch, the Beijing News reported.On Sunday, scientists gathered together for an equipment checkout to make sure, for the last time, that the satellite was in a normal condition. If everything goes well, the moon probe satellite will be able to send the first picture of the moon by noon, November 6.There is another moon probe satellite to serve as the backup for Chang'e No. 1 so that if the initial launch fails, scientists can do the corrections immediately and try to launch another satellite into space. However, the relaunch might take place a year later from now. If the initial launch proves to be successful, scientists can use this backup satellite to carry out a deeper and more thorough exploration into the moon in future.The backup satellite is designed in a similar way to Chang'e No. 1.The main tasks facing Chang'e No. 1 are to take the 3D pictures of the moon, to explore the useful elements on the moon and analyze their distribution features, to test the depth of the soil on the moon and to explore the space environment between the moon and the earth. Chang'e No. 1 is supposed to work for a year. If everything goes smoothly, it can finish all its tasks within three months. During the rest of the nine months, scientists can use the satellite to carry out more researches about the moon, said a person working at the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense on a public occasion.Scientists will publicize the first picture sent by Chang'e 1 from the moon, said Ouyang Ziyuan, chief designer for China’s moon probe satellite.“We will not make major changes to the (first) picture and we will try to release the picture to the public as soon as possible,” the chief scientist said. He said that the picture might be publicized about one hour after scientists received all the data.So far, the weather conditions in Xichang have been ideal for the launch. Even if it rains, the launch can be expected to be done on time. “Of course, it should not rain too heavily,” said people at the launching center.
