Chinanews, Beijing, Aug 9 – On Wednesday and Thursday, two Chinese, Mr. Geng from Baoding city, Hebei Province, and Yang Yang from Changde city in Hunan Province, arrived at the Daopei Hospital in Beijing to donate their hematopoietic stem cells. The stem cells will be used to cure the disease of two patients in South Korea, and sent there on Thursday. In July this year, the Chinese Marrow Donor Program (CMDP) signed a cooperative agreement with its counterpart in South Korea, whereby the two institutions would be allowed to search for matched blood types between leukemic patients and marrow donors across the two countries. The two institutions soon found that the stem cell structures of Mr. Geng and Yang Yang matched the stem cell structure of two leukemic patients in South Korea. On August 8 and 9, doctors at Daopei Hospital collected the stem cells of the two Chinese donors. After the surgery, Chinese doctors presented the hematopoietic stem cells to South Korean doctors who came to Beijing to receive the stem cells. The stem cells will be transported to South Korea by air.By the end of July this year, CMDP had kept 600,000 pieces of stem cells data bank information. More than 700 Chinese had donated their stem cells at CMDP, and 29 foreign patients had received stem cells from Chinese donors.
