Chinanews, Lhasa, June 16 - Thanks to the special passage set up for Tibetan antelopes to cross the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, they have got used to the existence of the railway in their habitates, and the railway has not affected their migration. The information was released by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, after a general investigation of the railway, with more than 100 scientists taking part in it.The Golmud-Lhasa part of Qinghai-Tibet Railway is located in the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with 960 km of it above the altitude of 4,000 m and 550 km of it running through permafrost regions. There are 3 state-level nature reserves around the railway, including a vast wetland preservation area.Natural conservation was one of the key topics being debated about during the building of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, particularly the protection of Tibetan antelopes.Tibetan antelopes have the habit of migrating northward every summer, and the railway just lies in their path. Besides, some other animal species, like the wild donkeys, might have the need of crossing the railway, too. Thus 33 special passages of 3 types to meet the needs of different animals, including the Tibetan antelopes, have been set up to guarantee their migration. The investigation shows that Tibetan antelopes have already learned to travel via such passages to avoid trains.
