Chinanews, Beijing, May 28 – About 130,000 babies were born in Beijing last year, with about 2,000 babies born with defects, say, 14.54‰ of the total.Last week，Beijing Municipal Health Bureau has launched a “Healthy babies, happy families” project, which will last till the coming August, during which experts at city and district levels will give speeches in communities, schools or hospitals on how to avoid birth defects.According to the statistics with Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, congenital heart disease, excessive numbers of fingers or toes and disorders of the external ear are the top three birth defects among Beijing newborn babies. Besides, there are other diseases such as cleft palate, cleft lip and palate congenital talipes equinovarus and hypospadia.“Among all babies with birth defects, only 30% can be cured, 30% will die in the perinatal period and 40% will suffer from lifetime disability. Some birth defects cases can actually be prevented or avoided through appropriate measures,” according to experts.
