13 couples of captive breeding zhuhuan, or crested ibises ( Nipponia Nippon) were reintroduced to nearby wild after adaptability training in Zhaigou Village of Chengguan Town in Ningshan County, Shaanxi Province.Chinanews, Xi'an, June 1 – On May 31, 10 a.m., 13 couples of captive breeding zhuhuan, or crested ibises ( Nipponia Nippon) were reintroduced to nearby wild after adaptability training in Zhaigou Village of Chengguan Town in Ningshan County, Shaanxi Province. This is the first time for the humankind to successfully rehabilitate captive ibises into the wild.These 26 healthy ibises have very strong abilities in breeding and wildlife surviving, and are living kilometers away from the only known wild breeding population in the Qinling Mountains of southern Shaanxi.In China, experiments on rehabilitating 23 captive ibises to the wild have been done ever since 2004, 13 of which are known to survive by now, or 57% of the original number. And 6 infants have been hatched by these ibises.Crested Ibis, first recorded in the ancient text of China, Russia, Korea and Japan, is one of the 50 rarest birds in the world, and also one of the most seriously endangered bird species global wide today. There are about 1,000 birds now after China's protecting effort.To help ibises regain their historical occupation, similar rehabilitation projects of ibises are planned to be carried out in Henan, Hubei, etc., which will surely provide valuable experience for other countries in their captive ibises rehabilitation work.
